The reconstruction of nickel and rhodium (001) surfaces upon carbon, nitrogen or oxygen adsorptions
نویسندگان
چکیده
Nickel and rhodium (001) surfaces display a similar (in terms of scanning tunneling microscopy images) clock reconstruction when half a monolayer of C–Ni, N–Ni or O–Rh is adsorbed; no reconstruction is observed instead for O–Ni. Adsorbate atoms sit at the center of the black squares of a chess-board, c(2×2), pattern and two different reconstructions are actually compatible with the observed STM images — showing a (2×2)p4g pattern — according to whether a rotation of the black or white squares occurs. We report on a first-principles study of the structure of X–Ni(001) and X–Rh(001) surfaces ( X=C, N, O) at half a monolayer coverage, performed using density-functional theory. Our findings are in agreement with all available experimental information and shed new light on the mechanisms responsible for the reconstructions. We show that the same substrate may display different reconstructions (or no reconstruction) upon adsorption of different atomic species, depending on the relative importance of the chemical and steric factors that determine the reconstruction. © 1999 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. The Reconstruction of Ni and Rh (001) Surfaces upon Carbon, Nitrogen, or Oxygen Adsorption Typeset Using Revt E X 1
Nickel and Rhodium (001) surfaces display a similar—as from STM images— clock reconstruction when half a monolayer of C/Ni, N/Ni or O/Rh is adsorbed; no reconstruction is observed instead for O/Ni. Adsorbate atoms sit at the center of the black squares of a chess-board, c(2 × 2), pattern and two different reconstructions are actually compatible with the observed STM images—showing a (2 × 2)p4g ...
متن کاملCatalytic removal of nitrogen dioxide in the air stream by nickel and nickel- platinum supported multiwall carbon nanotube.
Introduction Nitrogen oxides as one of the most dangerous environmental pollutant, have harmful effects on the health of people in the workplace. Today, the catalytic oxidation of nitrogen oxides is a highly efficient method for removing of this gases that has been dedicated part of researches. The aim of study was to investigate the removal efficiency of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) by nickel and...
متن کاملCatalytic Decomposition of Methane and Ethylene into the Carbon and Hydrogen
The role of nickel as catalyst on the conversion of methane and ethylene in a gas phase flow reactor in the absence of oxygen is studied. In this study, nickel in its different forms is used as catalyst. The role of pressure, flow rate, and temperature on the conversion of feed gases is investigated. The experiments have been carried out in the presence and absence of the catalysts to measure t...
متن کاملNickel Oxide/Carbon Nanotubes as Active Hybrid Material for Oxygen Evolution Reaction
Carbon nanotubes are of great interest due to their high surface area and rich edge sites, which are favorable for wide applications. Here, a simple and efficient routine is presented by decoration of multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) with nickel oxide (NiO) nanoparticles. The morphologies of NiO-MWCNT were investigated by using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energydispersive X-...
متن کاملTHE ACTIVATION OF CARBON DIOXIDE AT A MAGNESIUM (1 00) SURFACE THE ROLE OF OXYGEN TRANSIENTS
X-ray photoelectron and high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopic (XPS-HREELS) studies have shown that the adsorption of carbon dioxide at Mg(100) surfaces at 80K is followed by a dissociative reaction leading to the formation of a metastable surface carbonate above 80K. The formation of a carbonate species is proposed to proceed through oxidation of C0 (g) by an active oxygen su...
